The inaugural meeting of the Humber Car club of New Zealand was held on 28 October 1975 at the Vintage Car Club rooms in Fairfax Avenue in Penrose Auckland. Previous to this meeting various people had been talking about forming a Humber Car Club, advertisements had been placed in motorings publications to ascertain what support there was. It was successful and the club has been operating continuously since 1975. Along the way, many of our members owned Hillmans as well and the club later became known as the Humber/ Hillman Car Club of New Zealand.
The aim of the club is to preserve our cars, have a club magazine, host a number of runs and activities and to have some fun.
Our Club has a variety of cars, some like the older pre war Humbers and Hillmans, the majority of members have various cars of the 1950's and 1960's. Members and new members are welcome regardless of the type of Rootes Group cars they have. If you own a later model, Hillman say a 1970's Hunter or an Avenger you are just as welcome to join as say someone with a pre war Humber Snipe.
Today the club has over one hundred members spread across the country. We currently have branches located in Auckland, Wellington and the Manawatu, plus a cluster in the Waikato. If there is enough members in a particular area, say Christchurch we are happy for other branches to be formed.
Today each branch meets monthly, we still publish our monthly magazine, we have a website plus we have our annual AGM held in various North Island locations.
We are looking for new members. The club is working well and many of our members have been involved for over twenty years.
As the Vice President of the club, I first joined in 1998. It has been great fun.
